Joseph Paul Mayo was born on March 26, 1924 in Quincy, Mass. and enlisted in the Army on June 25, 1943 at Boston. At the time of enlistment he had completed two years of high school, was unmarried, and living in Shenandoah, Va. Mayo joined the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colo. where he was assigned to Company A, 85th Infantry Regiment.
